What this map shows
Each value is the mean annual duration between the last frost in the first half of the agricultural year and the first frost in the second half. Frost is defined as a valid local day whose minimum 2 m air temperature is below 0 °C.
This is not the same as the thermally defined growing season. Crops can be limited by cool temperatures, heat accumulation, or moisture even when frost is absent.
How it is calculated
MetriClima assigns hourly ERA5-Land 2 m air temperature to longitude-derived local solar calendar days and identifies each day’s minimum. A local day is valid when at least 22 finite hourly values are available, and frost is recorded only when that minimum is strictly below 0 °C.
Northern and equatorial agricultural years run January–December: the last spring frost is the last frost from January 1 through June 30, and the first autumn frost is the first frost from July 1 through December 31. Southern agricultural years run July–June: the corresponding halves are July 1–December 31 and January 1–June 30.
The two boundary frost days are excluded, so the annual duration is first-autumn-frost boundary minus last-spring-frost boundary minus one day. If no spring frost occurs, the start boundary is immediately before the agricultural year; if no autumn frost occurs, the end boundary is immediately after it. A year with neither frost is therefore assigned 365 frost-free days.
An agricultural year is valid with at least 350 valid local days and at least 170 valid days in each half. Frost dates are normalized to a 365-day agricultural calendar before duration is calculated. Invalid years are excluded, and the map is the arithmetic mean of valid annual durations across 2011–2025.
Data source
MetriClima processes ERA5-Land surface data on the 0.1° latitude–longitude download grid. The physical spacing of this geographic grid varies with latitude. ERA5-Land is a land-surface reanalysis dataset providing consistent hourly climate variables.
This layer uses the ERA5-Land t2m variable, representing hourly air temperature 2 m above the land surface. Hourly values are aggregated into local-day minima.

Climate period and representation
2011–2025 agricultural-year climatology
The map averages valid agricultural years labeled 2011–2025. Southern Hemisphere year 2025 spans July 2025 through June 2026; invalid years are excluded.
Days
The duration uses a normalized 365-day agricultural calendar and is displayed in 30-day bands.
How to interpret the map
A longer period indicates a longer average interval between modeled freezing days. The displayed value is a multi-year average; annual boundary dates and durations vary, so it does not guarantee a frost-free interval of that length in any particular year.
Compare the duration with the separate spring and autumn frost-date layers to understand whether late spring or early autumn frost more strongly limits the frost-free window.
Applications
- Comparing frost-free windows between locations
- Providing climatic context for crop and cultivar season requirements
- Providing climatic context for seasonal operations and frost-protection planning
- Assessing broad frost constraints on agriculture, ecosystems, and land use
Limitations
- The 0 °C 2 m air-temperature threshold does not directly represent leaf, bud, or ground-surface temperature.
- Frost-Free Period measures the interval between boundary frost dates, not the number, severity, or duration of frost events.
- The multi-year average conceals year-to-year variability in frost dates and duration.
- Local frost hollows, slope position, vegetation, and cold-air drainage may differ substantially within one grid cell.
